Kahn Family Baby Quilts (2009, 2010, and 2013)

My childhood friend Peggy Raskind Blumenthal became a grandmother when her younger daughter Elana Kahn had twins Chana and Dovid on 18 March 2009.   I used a rubber duckie print for this one. The pattern came from Sara Nephew’s book “Sensational 6-point Star Quilts” and was chosen to add a Jewish touch to the quilt.

Here's the other quilt for the twins.   I used a ladybug print for this one. This pattern also came from Sara Nephew’s book “Sensational 6-point Star Quilts” and was chosen to add a Jewish touch to the quilt.
Their little sister Tzipora was born on Dec. 30, 2010.  For her quilt, instead of using a Jewish geometry with a typical juvenile print fabric, I reversed the design process and used a Jewish fabric (Chanukah motif) and the Rag Doll pattern from Quiltmaker Magazine Early Fall 1989 with its cute 3-dimensional accents.
Their 4th child (in less than 4 1/2 years!) Gavriella was born on Aug. 30, 2013.  To make this project portable over the summer, I decided to do hand embroidery.  I found coloring book pages for teaching the Hebrew alphabet on the internet and learned some more Hebrew myself while I stitched.  Each letter is a cartoon character holding an object the name of which starts with that letter.

Alferness Family Baby Quilts (2007 and 2011)

This quilt was machine pieced and machine quilted for Oliver Alferness born November 14, 2007.  It was made from the remaining underwater turtle fabrics used for Joy and Jonathan’s Ocean Waves wedding quilt in 2001.  The pattern is based on a quilt I saw that was inspired by Sierpinski Carpet Fractals which are constructed by starting with a square, removing the middle ninth, removing the middle ninth of each remaining square, and continuing infinitely.

This wall hanging was hand stitched for Eden Alferness born August 20, 2010.  The colors were chosen to compliment her nursery and the pond theme and dragonflies were chosen to reflect the dragonfly silhouettes on her nursery wall.

Gabriel Supnik Baby Quilts (2011)

This baby quilt was machine pieced, hand embroidered, and hand quilted especially for my grandson Gabriel whose mommy, Lori Newman, is studying to be a veterinarian. The purple fabric was left from the background of his parents’ wedding chuppah. The cat embroidery patterns were drawn by Robert Furstenau for the December 1979 issue of Better Homes and Gardens Magazine.  The dog embroidery patterns were adapted from images available at http://www.education.com/worksheets/?q=dogs .  I was able to find the same purple fabric again to make curtains for his nursery.

This baby quilt was made to be especially soft to help my grandson Gabriel Supnik practice sitting up and sometimes falling over.  It’s called a biscuit quilt because the puffy squares filled with polyester look like a pan of biscuits.  I’m calling it the “dog biscuit” quilt for the fabrics I used. I’ll pass it along to any subsequent grandchildren that also need a soft place to practice sitting in the future.
