College Dorm Quilts

Claudia Greene (2009)

This Morning Glory Vine quilt was specially made in honor of my cousin Claudia Greene’s graduation from high school in Minnesota and attendance at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana.  The pattern was adapted from the book “The Curved Two-Patch System” by Joyce Schlotzhauer.  I did the machine piecing and Julie Crossland of Hudson, NH did the machine quilting with a pattern designed by me.

This photo shows a close-up of the back of Claudia's quilt with the custom machine quilting pattern I designed to coordinate with the morning glory vine patchwork.

Ted Greene (2011)

I made this crest quilt in honor of my cousin Ted Greene’s graduation from high school in Minnesota and attendance at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY.  The design was Ted’s idea and represents his interests in computer technology, comedy improvisation, snowboarding, and computer gaming.  I machine appliquéd and quilted the center.   Laurie LaConte of Acton, MA machine quilted the background with a custom pattern designed by Kim Diamond of Sweet Dreams Quilt Studio in Columbia, MO.

This photo shows a close-up of the custom machine quilting pattern with Ted's name all over the background of the quilt.

Cameron Reid (2011)

This Cityscape quilt was specially made in honor of my cousin Cameron Reid’s graduation from high school and attendance at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY to study architecture.  It is entirely machine pieced and machine quilted from 100% cotton.  The photo was taken by his parents in his dorm room during Freshman orientation.

This close-up photo shows some of the many fabrics either new or in my "stash" that made the "buildings" of Cam's quilt. I love the 3-dimensional effect of the geometry and shading.

The pattern was adapted with the author's permission from this small photo on page 35 in the book “Building Block Quilts” by Sara Nephew published in 1990.  Of all the quilts in the book, this was Cam's favorite and it came with no directions!
